Recycling and Pollution

In our fast-paced digital age, electronics have become an integral part of our lives. From smartphones to laptops and home appliances, these devices enhance our productivity, entertainment, and connectivity. However, this comes at a price: electronic waste, or e-waste. E-waste not only presents a major issue for safe and secure disposal, but also contributes significantly to pollution, the greenhouse effect, global warming, and the depletion of natural resources.

Recycling electronics reduces the need for new materials, limits the tons of waste produced, reduces water pollution, protects the health of vulnerable people in low-income countries, and safeguards human health. There is a consequent reduction in mining waste, ore processing, carbon emissions, fossil fuel combustion, plastic pollution that would otherwise be created by a lot of materials ending up in landfill sites.

According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2020, a staggering 53.6 million metric tonnes of e-waste were generated worldwide in 2019. This volume of waste contains a variety of hazardous substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium that can leach into the environment if not disposed of properly. When electronics are dumped in landfills or incinerated, these toxins can infiltrate soil, water, and cause air pollution, posing severe health risks to both humans and wildlife. And if e-waste is incinerated, it aggravates the situation even more by the emission of many greenhouse gases, including carbon monoxide pollution. These emissions inevitably contribute to global climate change and the discharge of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Preventing Toxic Materials from Entering Landfills

Electronics often contain hazardous materials like lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants. When these materials end up in landfills, they can leach into the soil and water, causing pollution. Recycling electronics requires less energy compared to producing new ones. By extending the life of electronic components through recycling, energy consumption and associated pollution are reduced.

Improper disposal of electronic waste, often in developing countries, is a major source of pollution. E-waste dumps release harmful chemicals into the air, soil, and water. In a June 2021 report, the World Health Organization reported: “As many as 12.9 million women are working in the informal waste sector, which potentially exposes them to toxic e-waste and puts them and their unborn children at risk. Meanwhile more than 18 million children and adolescents, some as young as 5 years of age, are actively engaged in the informal industrial sector, of which waste processing is a sub-sector. Children are often engaged by parents or caregivers in e-waste recycling because their small hands are more dexterous than those of adults. Other children live, go to school and play near e-waste recycling centres where high levels of toxic chemicals, mostly lead and mercury, can damage their intellectual abilities.”
